Hoarding

When belongings take over a home.

Hoarding is when someone finds it very hard to let go of possessions, so much that their home becomes difficult or unsafe to live in.

What it is not

It is not laziness or being messy. It is often linked to anxiety, grief, trauma or other mental health difficulties. Belongings can feel like safety or connection.

Risks

  • Fire risk and blocked exits
  • Falls
  • Damp, pests and health problems
  • Risk of eviction

What helps

  • Gradual, supported decluttering at the person's pace
  • Therapy that focuses on the feelings behind keeping things
  • Practical help from specialist services

What does not help

Forced clear outs while someone is away often cause deep distress and the house fills up again.

If you are worried about someone

Talk gently and without judgement. Focus on safety first, like clearing exits, rather than everything at once.
