Bipolar disorder, in plain words

Moods that swing between highs and lows.

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition where mood shifts between periods of depression and periods of unusually high energy, called mania or hypomania.

Highs can include

  • Very little need for sleep
  • Racing thoughts and fast speech
  • Big plans, spending or risk taking
  • Feeling unusually powerful

Lows can include

  • Deep sadness or emptiness
  • Low energy
  • Hopelessness
  • Thoughts of suicide

Treatment

Bipolar disorder is treatable, usually with medication and talking therapies. Many people live full lives.

If you are worried

Talk to a doctor. Bring someone who knows you, as they may notice highs you do not.
