Anxiety explained simply

What is happening in your body and mind, and what helps.

Anxiety is the body's alarm system. It is meant to protect you from danger. Sometimes it goes off when there is no real threat, or stays on all the time.

What it can feel like

  • Racing heart, tight chest, shaky hands
  • Worry you cannot switch off
  • Feeling on edge or restless
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Avoiding situations

Why it happens

Stress, trauma, genetics, health problems and life changes can all play a part.

What helps

  • Slow breathing, with a longer breath out than in
  • Regular movement
  • Cutting down on caffeine and alcohol
  • Facing feared situations gradually, not avoiding them
  • Talking therapies, which are effective for many people

If anxiety stops you living your life, talk to a doctor.
