After an accident or a violent incident
The first weeks after something sudden and frightening.
A crash, an attack, a fire, a robbery. Sudden events can shake you even if you were not badly hurt.
The first few weeks
It is common to feel:
- Shaky, tired, jumpy, or unable to concentrate
- Replaying what happened, or what could have happened
- Anxious about going back to the place, or doing the same thing again
- Fine one day and not the next
For many people, these reactions ease over a few weeks.
What helps
- Rest, eat, and keep some routine
- Talk about it if you want to, with people who will listen
- Return gradually to the place or activity, with someone if needed
- Avoid big decisions for a little while
When to get help
If after a month you are still struggling a lot, or if it is getting worse rather than better, speak to a doctor. Early help works well.
If you were hurt by another person, a victim support service can explain your options. The Resource Finder can help you find one.
