Time off from both

Stroebe and Schut's model has a part that is easy to miss. People do not only move between facing the loss and handling the practical changes. They also take time away from both, and that is part of coping too.

Why it matters for a man with a list

A man who copes by working through a list can turn the list into the whole of life. Every evening goes to admin. Every weekend goes to the house. There is always one more account, one more form.

The model suggests that this is not how coping tends to work. Time spent watching a game, fishing, seeing a friend, or doing nothing in particular is not wasted. It is one of the three places a person moves between.

A night off from the paperwork is not falling behind. It is part of how this works.

One day a week for the admin

The most practical way to protect time off is to give the admin a fixed home. Pick one day, or two evenings, and do the paperwork then. When it comes up at other times, write it on the list and leave it until the admin day.

This also stops the practical work leaking into every hour, which is what makes it feel endless.

Where this course ends

You now have the order things bite, a way to make calls hold, and a reason to stop sometimes. The first ninety days sheet carries the full list.

If the practical work is done and things still feel as heavy as they did at the start, or heavier, that is worth taking seriously. The piece on how to tell you need a clinician explains how to tell and what to say.

Your task

Pick one evening this week with no admin in it at all. Write it on the Monday sheet as the thing you are not doing, on purpose.
